The installation was first created during Xu Bing's stay as the inaugural Coca-Cola Fellow of the American Academy in Berlin and was subsequently shown at the Museum of East Asian Art. Different Background Stories were also created for the Guangzhu Biennale and the Suzhou Art Museum in 2006.
