When artist Xu Bing held his solo exhibition Language & the Art of Xu Bing at the Macao Museum of Art in 2017, he was in the process of creating his first experimental video work, Dragonfly Eyes. Unfortunately, this piece could not be presented to the Macau audience during the exhibition.

Over the past seven years, the world has faced unprecedented chaos. With the emergence of new technologies, the iteration of concepts, and the redefination of terminologies, the age-old systems of human civilization increasingly obsolete, compelling all individuals to return to the same foundational point for renewed reflection.

Xu Bing once remarked that art is inherently elusive—it slips through one’s grasp. Its nature is such that it evolves as society changes. As artists, whom he describes as “craftsmen who love to ponder,” they continually refine their ideas through studio practice, seeking to resolve the perplexities of our time through unique forms. At the invitation of the University of Macau, Xu Bing will share his current reflections on art with faculty and students: Doing Art, Do What?
